a TER GETAWE CRUISES OFFER something for everyone — from lounging by the pool for weeks to intensive daily workouts. . Cruise into FITNESS IS fast becoming a popular cruise ship activity. The demand is so high for pro- grams that Holland America Line offers a Passport to Fitness pro- gram on all cruises, including seven-day Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises. Nearly one fourth of all Carib- bean passengers participate in the activity program, which rewards fitness with prizes. In addition to the benefits to staying fit, the program keeps people active. Even better, par- ticipants have a great opportunity to make friends as they go through the program together. “You'll have a number of op- portunities, outside of the tradi- tional assigned meal seatings, to meet and get to know a wider variety of people. The social benefits are an added plus,’’ said Douglas Gray, the cruise line’s ruisestipeenters Tina — A real cruiseship specialist on the North Shore ell years of ship experience e Specializing in cruises only © The most knowledgeable cruise staff in Vancouver e Thousands of reierral | clients e Evening in-home H group consultations available i 985-7447 (SHIP) | 1823 Capilano Rd. Passengers who sign up for the free program receive a small pass- port booklet on a cord. Then, as they participate in a wide variety of fitness activities such as dance classes, shuf- fleboard tournaments, aerobics and a daily walk-a-mile program, passengers collect stamps in their passports. Tournament winners earn addi- tional stamps. Stamps also can be earned for taking a_ healthful massage, the daily weigh-in and for choosing to eat heart-healthy menu selections. What does ‘‘different sittings”* for meals mean? Some ships have one main sit- ting that accommodates all the passengers in the dining room at one time. However, many ships have two sittings which differ only as to the time schedule. You can request the sitting — early or late — you prefer at the time of book- ing. If you enjoy meeting people, or if you’re travelling alone, you might want to request a larger table to sit at. Can I get a restricted diet? Most ships will make special ar- rangements for salt-free, low car- bohydrate, kosher, weight wat- ching and other diet specifica- tions. However, this request should be made in advance, so advise your travel agent of this requirement when you book your cruise. “Is getting seasick a common problem? The most popular cruise areas boast some of the calmest waters in the world. As well, stabilizers on modern ships, advance availability of accurate weather tess breakers are awarded for various levels achieved. “This is a runaway successful program. We are always looking at ways to enhance and expand it. People literally run from one event to another,”’ said Gray. R.V.
