Bulbs need fertilizing, too

THE FOLLOWING are little-
known facts about bulbs and their
flowers. Did you know that:

* Bulbous and tuberous plants
sometimes need fertilizer? General-
ly, bulbs naturally contain all of
the nutrients needed for successful
flowering. Hover, if left in the
same place in the garden year after
year, a light feeding is recom-
mended to promote the growth of
the plants and the profusion of
bloom.

@ It’s okay to cut away some of
the leaves surrounding the tiny,
white flowers of lily-of-the-valley?
Ordinarily leaves should never be
cut because they are the lungs of
the plant and are necessary to en-
sure its continued growth. Howev-
er, since these plants naturalize
well in dark corners of the garden
and the flowers are often obscured

yellows and deep mauves of the
rhododendrons, Capilano College
is a beautiful place to be at this
time of year.

Originally planted in 1973 by
biology and outdoor recreation
students, the gardens are known
for their unique plantings. Each
year landscape/horticulture  stu-
dents add some 7,000 bulbs to the
spring plantings. The community is
invited to take tours of the campus
using the college’s Garden Walks
map as a guide.

These are available at the main
reception desk in A building 7 a.m.
to if p.m. seven days a week. For
