Sergeant major on parade SIXTH Field Engineer Squadron has a new sergeant major. Long time serving member Julian Syme was recently pro- - moted to master warrant offi- cer and appointed sergeant major of the North Shore unit. Syme was born in North Vancouver and spent his early childhood in Europe where his father served as a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force. He completed his education at North Vancouver high school. Syme joined Sixth Field Engineer Squadron in 1970 and completed an automotive apprenticeship in 1975. Benween 1975 and 1978 he tained with the regular force at CEB Chilliwack ‘as a heavy ‘equipment — operator and automotive Vancouver and Vancouver. He trained extensively in Wales with the un er reg iment — _ the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers (frequent visitors to the North Shore unit) — in 1978. He was award the Cancdian Forces Decoration in 1982 and a Clasp to the Decoration in 1992. Syme now owns and oper- ates an automotive repair shop in North Vancouver. Sixth Field Engineer Squadron was formed in 191 by then city engineer James Pemberton Fell.
