THE MURDER of a 73-
year-old Sunset Beach
woman, who was found
stabbed to death in her
home early Sunday, has
recked the normaily quiet
waterfront: community and
has shocked the many
friends who knew her.

Said a friend who taught French
at Hillside Secondary with murder
victim Kathleen Kermode, ‘‘We
have been very close friends for a
Jong time. In fact we were going
for lunch with her on Monday. It’s
terrible.”

“Sh: was one of those teachers
who { don't think ever had a day
off, ur illness even. And she used
to spend hours with the kids, help-
ing them before and after school.
She was very intelligent. very
well-read, completely up to date on
politics, theatre, everything. She
was a very active woman.”’

Kermode taught at West Van-
couver Secendary School and later
at Hillside Secondary (now Hillside
Middle Schoul) before she retired
at age 65.

A former Hillside student recalls
Kermode keeping fudge in her fil-
ing cabinet which she occasionally
shared with her students as a prize.

Said Sunset Beach resident Peter
Black, “It’s a quiet little area that

is pretty much left alone and peo-
ple in the neighborhood are ner-
vous. She’s lived near the niarina
for many, many years — a quiet
lady. It's really a shock.’’

Kermode lived alone
home.

Evidence at the scene indicates
the victim’s home had been broken
in to. The killer used a ladder to
enter the house from the sundeck.

Police investigators also found
Kermode’s car, with its keys on the
roof, parked on the road to the
house.

A neighbor alerted the police to
the killing, and Kermode’s body
was discovered at approximately 7
