Brian Lagden with the radio call sign VE7QH, president of the North Shore Amateur Radio Club, said: ‘‘The public, young and old, is weicome to visit the display and see ham radio in action, perhaps to talk to radio operators around the world.”’ Licensed ‘by Communications Canada, amateur radio operators perform critical public service dur- ing natural disasters or civil emergencies. These trained opera- tors often provide the only reliable communications into, within, and out of disaster areas. Amateurs played an important role in the Mississauga, Ontario, train derailment, Mexico City and Armenia earthquakes, Hurricane Gilbert and other recent major disasters. Make recycled art ENVIRONMENT WEEK starts June 3 and to celebrate it the Imagination Market is bringing its barrels of enticing recycled materi- als to nine locations across B.C., including one on the North Shore. The public is invited to visit the Imagination Market booth at Capilano Mall on Saturday, June 3 and Sunday, June 4 from noon to 4p.m. Participants can build models, dioramas or scenes from nature us- ing ‘‘unnatural'’ materials that were originally destined to be landfill. The Imagination Market, a non-profit arts and recycling organization, collects a variety of safe, industrial cast-offs and makes them available for creative re-use through workshops, retail sales and mail order. The organization’s goats are to increase both creativity and en- vironmental awareness through the re-use of these materials.
