Police investigate assault, robbery NORTH VANCOUVER RCMP are investigating the Aug. } assault and robbery of a patron of a locat hotel. The man was walking up a dark alley at approximately 10:30 p.m. when he was hit from behind and robbed of his wallet and its contents. The victim was uninjured and the male suspect fled the area. The investigation continues. Man fined for Uic fraud A 44-YEAR-OLD North Vancouver iman was fined a total of $900 in North Vancouver provincial court Wednesday after he pleaded guilty to making false statements in regard to unemployment in- surance. John Morris was charged under the Unemployment Insurance Act with nine counts of making false statements for two-week periods from Aug. 31, 1986, to Jan. 4, 1987. Appearing before North Vancouver provincial court Judge J.B. Paradis, Morris was fined $100 on each of the nine counts. Failure to pay the fine by Feb. 3, 1989, wil) mean a 30-day jail term. (Raccoon rescued from netting THE WILDLIFE Rescue Association (WRA) of British Columbia was called to a North Vancouver home recently to assist a raccoon in distress. The baby raccoon had become entangled in some netting erected” in a backyard garden. The raccoon was extricated, captured and reunited with its family. A WRA spokesman said the public should never touch a wild animal. The animal could be rabid. If a wild animal is found in need, phone the WRA at 526-7275 for instructions and directions. The non-profit organization cares for injured and orphaned wild animals with the. intention of returning them to the wild. The organization relies heavily on the sale of memberships, pubtic donations and volunteers. soating safely saves lives RED CROSS Water Safety Service statistics show that in 1987, 75 per cent of boaters who drowned in B.C. were not wearing per- sonal flotation devices or lifejackets. In 40 per cent of the cases, the occupants of the crafts had flota- tion devices or lifejackets aboard, but were not wearing them. In 35 per cent of the cases, the equipment was not on board. Said Steve Borthwick, chairman of the safety service: ‘‘By law all boats require Department of Transport-approved personal flota- tion devices or lifejackets." Other statistics show that 60 per cent of all boating accidents result from people standing up in a craft such as a canoe or rowboat, and 33 per cent of all drowning victims are intoxicated at the time of death. Library .. funding announced WEST VANCOUVER- Howe Sound MLA John Reynolds has announced a rrovincial contribution of inore than $36,000 towards library service in Lions Bay, Bowen Island, Squamish, Whistler and Pemberton. “We use our public libraries more than any other jurisdiction in North America...,’’ said Reynolds, in letters to the various library boards. The Lions Bay Library Associa- tion received $3,514 from the province, $2,636 of it to go to the purchase of books and library materials. A cheque for $4,630 was received by the Bowen Island Public Library Association, which will be spending $3,473 of the total for new books and materials. The Squamish Public Library Association, the largest of the group, received $16,435, while the Whistler Public Library Associa- tion was allotted $7,532. Pemberton and District Public Library Association was given $4,512, with $3,384 of this desig- nated for new library materials. Library funding is made up of contributions from the municipal and provincial governmenis. “Public library service reaches virtually every British Columbian and the continuing partnership be- tween the province, local gov- ernment and public library boards helps to make it a success,"’ said Reynolds.
