Citizen rallies for private police scanners

A NORTH Vancouver man
wants community help to
help the police.

Neil Maclean says he would
like to see North Vancouver
RCMP establish a private com-
munication system, and he its will-
ing to do some fund raising to sce
that happen.

“Crooks are using police scan-

ners legally for illegal purposes,”
said MacLean.

He said he is upset that a Van-
couver police officer was killed this
week by a suspected drug dealer
who owned a scanner. (Vancouver
police said there is no indication
the man had been following police
movements on his scanner).

Stewart Thompson said while he
agrees police scanners are being
used by criminals, he doesn’t think

“The government wouldn't
sanction it,’’ said Thompsor..

“If they’re going to purchase a
secure system for the RCMP,
they’re not going to accept a citi-
zen in North Vancouver trying to
raise funds for that purpose.”

Thompson said technology exists
that would give police a private
communication system, but it
would cost millions of dollars.
