Brochure causes sparks

NORTH VANCOUVER Ci-
ty Council referred a pro-
posal to participate with
North Van District for rec-
reation brochures to the
Recreation Committee.

The District invited the
City to pay half of the
estimated $20,260 cost to
make .and distribute three
brochures, highlighting park
and recreation services on
the North Shore.

But City council members
hesitated to join with the

project, since they had not
been previously consulted
and the City’s cost would be
about $10,000.

Ald. Stella Jo Dean said
the City was already plann-
ing a brochure that would
cost nothing, because adver-
tising would pay for it,

“ft wished we could have
gotten together on it,"’ Dean
said. ** But we're not past
the point of no return,”’

Referring to the already
made-up brochures, with
North Van City mapped out,

Ald. Rod Clark said. ‘ft’s a
worthwhile cause, but it's an
unwilling bribe in this mar-
riage. { feel we're being
hustled down the aisle. Some
of the information is redun-
dant — included in the Rec-
reation Commission’s pro-
gram brochure.”

City engineer Allan
Phillips said the District
undertook the project for
District. members. ‘‘but it
wasn't feasible to leave a big
white blob where the City
was.”
