DROPPING INTO LA CUCINA Fine food and atmosphere A CUCCINA restaurant at 1509 Marine Drive in North Vancouver has always been one of my favorite restaurants - though sometimes I ask myself why. LEN SLADE was a busboy to do the chores of pouring the water, clean- ing and setting tables and ser- ving coffee. This would leave the waiters time to adequate- ly wait on their patrons. Through the years thar | have frequented La Cuccina | have always been impressed with the presentation and quality of the food. But for some reason the service tends to be inconsistent and sometimes offhand. The other night was no ex- ception. The restaurant was After a half hour wait my packed. But to my surprise wife and I were able to place there were only two waiters our dinner order. For ap- and the owner = scurrying petizers we selected the baked around to serve all the mushroom caps stuffed with customers. proscuitto, salami and What seemed to be lacking parmesan cheese ($3.95) and the salad of greens, fontina cheese and sweet red peppers ($3.25). The mushroom caps were very tasty and I! would definitely recommend them. The salad was a good size, fresh and served with a vinaigrette dressing. The main courses offered are quite extensive. There is a wide variety of pasta dishes ranging in price from $6.95. For the spaghetuu bolognese to $7.50 for the linguini with clams and peas. In addition to pasta there is a fine sole, duck, lamb, prawns, and beef that are priced from $9.50 to $13.50. Our choices for the night were the veal scaloppini cooked in lemon butter and the special of the night — brochette of beef with ber- naise sauce. Both meals were accompanied by pan fried potatoes and a blend of sauteed vegetables. After dinner we ordered coffee and shared a delicious lemon cheese custard topped with raspberry sauce. So, if you are the type who enjoys a cozy atmosphere and well prepared food but are not one to demand impec- cable service | would highly recommend La Cuccina. The bill for the two of us, including a bottle of Bolla Soave white wine, was $51.40.
