What is new about the drop-ins 1s that they are cur- rently engaged in a drive to raise their profile in the com- munity and to attract new participants. North Shore drop-in coor- dinator Marjorie Knight says the centres’ goals are varied: to prevent family stress, to provide a children’s program which allows for healthy, holistic development and to provide a supportive, educa- tional service for parents. “We also help with the separation process between the parent and the child. It helps them prepare for the child’s upcoming school days. [t's important that the parent be patient,’ says Knight Perhaps more important, however, 1s that the drop-tins provide a vital link to the out- side world for many house bound tndividuals Volunteer Ingrid Fisher savs the drop ins keep people at home ‘in touch with the world "" Says Fisher ‘“‘When I first moved to Norgate.
