THIS BEAUTIFUL 1958 Cadillac Fleetwood Sixty Special was originally owned by a little old lady from Palm Springs, brought up to B.C. by North Vancouver resident Perry Johnson about three years ago. With many fascinating extéas and “bits”, including, top left, the roomy plush interior and top right, the secret location of the gas tank filler cap hidden: beneath the tail light, the car is a delight. However, because he fs now working on boats up the coast, Perry is looking for a new home for the salmon covered Caddy. DAVE EVANS THE MONEY supply in August, on a seasonally ad- justed basis, was 16 higher than in August, 1982. On a raw basis, the money supply increased in the week ended August 3! by $1.24 bilhton. Nevertheless, the demand for credit remains slack. During the last reporting week, general loans were up by $182 million, of which $12) milhon was on the per sonal side. But, on a year- over year basts, general loans are now $12,045 mithon less than they were a year ago and business loans themselves are down a little further by $12,144 millon. lronically enough, the economy itself now shows some signs of slowing down. To be sure, the balance of payments on current account showed a surplus of $1.1 billion in the second quarter as opposed to a surplus of only $253 million in the first quarter, although the first quarteys tends to be a lean quarter so far as the current account goes. But the mer- chandise trade balance, although healthily in surplus, has been beginning to show somewhat smaller numbers in the last few months. in April, the surplus was $1.97 bilhon; it dropped to $1.71 billion in May and to $1.53 bilhon in June; and it was $! 40 billion in July. This is not much of a change, but it is a change in the wrong direction which will probably flow through to the current account position in due course. Housing starts have deteriorated markedly from an annualized peak of 256,000 units in May down to 146,000 units in July and now down further to 135,000 units in August. Admittedly, the end of many incentive schemes has not helped in this context, but neither have tising mortgage rates. The Canadian dollar has continued to do well tn rela- ton to the United States dollar, which has to be the touch stone. The Canadian dollar survived the usual end- of-month downwards pressure and is aow running at a level close to US$0.8125.
