C2 - Sunday, April 17, 1983 - North Shore News Volunteerism on the rise FROM PAGE C1 because of the cutbacks in social services and _ the overall poor economic conditions. Unemployment has also increased the amount of time people have available for volunteering. Then too, we are making a conscious effort to publicize volunteer opportunities and the value of voluneerism — much more so than in the past, I think. In 1982, we had a 38% increase in inquines about volunteer service and a 33% increase in referrals of velunteers to the various agencies. And it appears that this trend is continuing into 1983. Q.: A recent’ Statistics Canada survey characterized the typical volunteer as being 25 to 44 years, well- educated, married, em- ployed and of etther sex. What kinds of people come into your office for volunteer work? Margaret: We're seeing fewer of the traditional “volunteers the middle aged woman, because they are increasingly joining the labour force. Working mothers with family and job responsibilities just don't have the time. Employed people look for volunteer work with a different focus than their regular job. For example, someone who shuffles paper all day will come in looking for a people-ornented volunteer position. Volunteers want to expand their horizons and test out new careers. People who are unem- ployed want something useful to fill their ume, keep them busy, and give them some job experience. A lot of young people and retired people are volun- teering. Fos the past four years the Volunteer Centre has had a special youth volunteer project, and this last year we've started a senior volunteer project —- “Semor Link” — to recrutt semors. It brings retirces in touch with others and gives them a chance to use their tremendous skills and cx- penence — which we badly need. Q Volunteers traditionally have been portrayed as being altrurstically mouvated “do gooders” Is this stl a main reason for volunteering? Margaret: It is) certainly a major reason, a basic motivation, but. itis OK to volunteer for other reasons Sometimes terview when we iin people they = are apologetic about wanting to gain certain things from thear volunteer expenence I feel there has to be something in it for the volunteer for it to be meaningful Some people come in because voluntecr cK penence is required for a course that they are taking Qthers want to careers test «pull before years in training want lo Invesftiog on they gust work cr gain THE RIGHT HONOURABLE JOE CLARK IMPORTANT MEETING The Capilano Progressive Conservative Riding Association has announced perience they can't get elsewhere.
