The old tweed that still lives On a cluster of smail islands, 50 miles off the west coast of Scotland, dedicated craftsmen produce over four million yards of hand woven Harris Tweed each year. This cottage industry is one of a very few remaining in a world of high technology and mass production. The Harris Tweed industry, which began commercial production about 1840, continues to be the back- bone of the economy of the Outer Hebrides islands. Consumer demand for garments made from these tweeds is so great that there are currently more than 1,000 island residents who treadle hand-operated looms in their homes to produce one of the finest wool fabrics available in the world. Originally Harris Tweeds, which take their name from Harris Island, were woven only for consumption by the islanders. In the mid 1800s the woven fabric was made available for commercial Sale on the mainland of Scotland. By the early 1900s the textile was granted a trademark, marking the beginning of the island trade that has grown in it size and production to meet worldwide consumer needs. Do you dress for failure ?
