At approximately 11:30 a.m. every Tuesday,
Wednesday and Friday there is a flurry of activity
in the kitchen of St. David’s Unitéd Church where

you. will find eighteen volunteers

group each day) busily preparing meals to be
delivered to’ shut-ins, handicapped and senior
citizens who live in North and West Vancouver.

Mobile Meals is a volun-
teer organization founded in
1968 to help those on the
North Shore who are unable
to prepare properly balanced
meals for themselves. At its.
inceptiion, Mobile Meals was
entirely started by volunteers
but in 1975 a grant from the
Department of Human Res-
‘ources enabled them to hire a
part-time Co-ordinator and

’ establish a central office in

the City of North Vancouver.

In 1975 11,487 meals were
delivered and to date app-
roximately 4,700. ‘

The service not only
provides a hot, noon meal
three times a week but the
short visit with the volunteer
gives a good .number of

people a chance to chat. It

brightens up an_ otherwise
dreary day.

The meals are prepared by
Woodward’s of Park Royal
and the Lynwocd Hotel (for
the Deep Cove Area). The
content of the. meal is
governed, by the Food Stan-
dards..and Menu Require-

Programs in B.C. The menus
are.varied and contain meat,
fish-or fowl, vegetables and

_ dessert. ‘Soup and salad are

served at least once a week.

The cost per meal is $1.50

but considering the variety.

and amount of food, very
inexpensive. Some of our
recipients who have small
appetites will get two meals
for the price of one.

The food is picked up by
volunteers from Woodward's
and brought to St. David's
Church kitchen... Once there,
it is apportioned into the
correct number of aluminium
trays, kept hot in the oven
until the: volunteer drivers
come to collect the number of
meals he or she requires for
the day. It is then transferred
into styrofoam cartons and
delivered. The whole process
takes about two hours per
day. Most volunteers deliver
only once every. six weeks
(usually to the same people)
but many of them will work

every week if required. The.

recipients eagerly await the’

arrival of the volunteers, not
just because of the meal but
for the contact with a
**friend.”?

From time to time, dona-
tions from Service clubs,
churches or private citizens
help keep the price of meals
to a minimum but rising
costs have increased the.
price of the meals earlier this
year. -

The volunteer. is the
backbone of the organiza-
tion. Each team has: a
Captain whose job it is to see
that she has enough. drivers
for the week and who works
dire¢tly with the Co-ordin-
ator to get the information
she requires. .

dinator, or the V.O.N. is all
