AS if it wasn’t painful- ty obvious, there was something seriously wrong about the cross- walk at Capilano and Eldon Road in the District of North Vancouver. Technically, there still ts but a solution is in motion and should be implemented soon (i.e. “as SOON as possi- bie”). Tabled by Mayor Bell and spearheaded by Diane Scovell and the Cleveland Parents Council Safety Committee, the pedestrian crassing at said intersection is due for an overhaul as unanimously decided last Monday night in a North Vancouver District council meeting. Finally, a pedestrian-con- trolled traffic light of the green/amber/red variety. Funds for the installation are to be allotted from the district’s capital contingency fund (wish I had one of those). Tronically, yours truly was preparing a Yengthy diatribe on that same intersection; hundreds of words worth of drivel and filler on the inade- quacics of the current sys- tem. T was going to ramble on about the easily miscon- strued flashing amber lights which technically and lawful- ly mean “proceed with cau- tion” yet were (are) placed exactly on top of the spot where caution is needed rather than a few dozen metre back where drivers have a moment to digest their meaning. Furthermore, I was going north shore news Conlin signals to point aut the erroncously placed “push button ta cross” sign used by pedestri- ans which misrepresents by implication the true respon- sibilities of pedestrians cross- . high expectations put upon drivers to read, see and interpret a situation both sudden and unique.” ing in a marked crosswalk. I was also going to men- tion the unique and bizarre use of flashing amber lights facing potential crosswalk- walkers, also a misrepresen- tation and which took the place of what would normal- ly be “walk/don’t walk” sig- nals (which, couldn’t/shouldn’t be used either because of the cross- walk type). These facts were going to lead to a classic Conlin ram- ble on the foibles of a false sense of security and the overly high expectations put upon drivers to read, see and interpret a situation both sudden and unique. & 7AYLORMOTIVE ay Pediat SprinG SPECIALS * <2 Lune, On & FER Check battery, test antifreeze, check tires & brakes, visual inspection “ck, Suren Lupe All above with written B.C. AA., inspection And to top it off Twas going to mention that the crosswalk at Eldon and Cap is located just beyond the crest of a bili so even astute drivers are hard pressed to see if the crosswalk is occu pied by wee ones until they are almost on top of the wee ones — which also reiterated my point about the poor placement of the flashing amber lights. I was going co conclude my tirade by suggesting “advanced” warning lights activated by pedestrians vet noticeable by drivers 30-50 metre before the fact. Finally, I was going to point out that, failing removal of the crosswalk altogether and restricting passage ar that point, a prop- er pedestrian-controlled traf: fic light assembly (as opposed to the current pedestrian controlled “wari- ing” light assembly) was required if the area was to be improved and made sate for wee ones — or any sized pedestrians for that matter. But they went ahead and did it without my input. 1 feel so small. Congratulations, Cleveland Parents Council Safety Committee! There’s some thunder | don’t mind having had stolen. Be safe.
