During the war, Mardon
squirrelled away her racket and
a ration of Slazenger and
Dunlop balls while she trained
anti-aircraft gunners on the
English coast.

“You couldn’r get tennis
balls then but I carried a few in

_ the bottom of my kit bag,” she
said.

At that time, tennis balls

* had to be stretched a lor fur-
ther. :

“When you played with
them they were bare. It wasn’t
like people do now, play with
them ovice and then say they
need a new can.”

“The last time I took a
week off I ended up playing
more than (I usually do),” she

Mardon also makes’ fre-
quent sojourns down south to
play in tourncys in Washington
State and Oregon.

She’s part of a Pacific
Northwest contingent thar
regularly dees battle. with
groups of players from other
regions of the U.S.

The age of the players does
nothing to’ diminish the skill
level, che said.

“We're older but we still
make each other run. They're
sneakier at that age,”
