28 — North Shore News — Sunday, February 20, 2000 Off-leash trail running provides the best exercise From previous page walks . Having two extremely active dogs, [ run with my dogs. A 40-minute run followed by a 20-minute cool down is a great cardio work-out. Puppies under the age of nine months should not go for extended on-leash runs. Their bones are still forming and the constant pounding may permanently damage them. Off-leash running in a controlled environment (not on the street) is OK for these , youngsters as they can moni- tor their own pace. - Exercising your dog off- leash on.a hike along an off- leash trail is probably the best way for a good canine work-out. Trails offer a variety of _ terrain where both dog and handler can challenge them- - selves physically. pow 1350001 Some people choose to go to a dog park. That is fine, but part of the exercise experience should be provid- ed by the owner, not other dogs, to maintain a positive canine-human relationship. In this case a half-hour canine-wrestling match at the dog park should equal a fun half-hour walk with a person. Sometimes busy lifestyles cannot accommodate an hour walk every day. If this is the case, consider hiring a professional dog walker. It is no secret that 1 am not fond of dog walkers who walk more than three dogs at a time. They cannot possibly watch all the dogs, monitor their behaviour, prevent them from being a nuisance to other park users and pick up after them. Some just go down to local parks and let the dogs run wild while they sit on a park bench sipping a $5 cof- fee. The dogs are getting exercise, but there seems something wrong, with this picture. Other professional walk- ers such as The Purple Leash (230-5514) or Sierra K9 Workouts (924-3393) offer small groups or one on one walks with special care and attention in mind. If after reading this, you have realized that your dog is not getting enough exer- cise, be sure to consult with your veterinarian before you increase the exercise. Once your dog gets the “exercise OK” get out there. You will notice the positive change in your dog on the very first day. — Joan is the owner of Sierra K9 Training Academy on the North Shore: For advice or training e-mail her at . Chronicle Books, 256 pages, $93 Terry Peters Contributing Writer ARABIAN horses are possibly the oldest breed in the world. Their origins can be traced back to 1700 BC, its distinctive wedge shaped head appearing on a skele- ton unearthed on the Sinai peninsula. The horse has been an integral part of middle eastern history, carrying its people in times of war and peace. The development of this powerful breed of horse and the impact it has had on other native breeds abroad is examined in great detail at the beginning of the book. Historical drawings and paintings illustrate the role of the Arabians. Known for their power and perseverance, Arabians consistently outperform other breeds in marathon races. The endurance race with its arduous courses and great distances are perfect testing grounds for Arabians and they rise to the challenge year after year. ; “It is in these disciplines that the Arab best shows his true mettle, that generous spir~.. it and noble courage, sheer guts and determination which, coupled with his dignity, | intelligence and beauty, make him persist to the end.” — : The second half of the book is filled with beautiful photographs of Arabian horses as. - they are found today throughout the world. ; Arab sheiks and their finest horses appear in expansive desert scenes, while another | section shows international owners with their prize horses, such as Rolling Stone drum-, : mer Charlie Watts pictured with four Arabs. : The photos alone are enough to make you want to return to the book repeated!y, but when combined with the historical information, Arabians becomes a treasure fur’ ‘any : horse lover.
