WHARF BLAZE Firefighters need Dear Editer: Having witnessed the fire at Vancouver Shipyards on Sept. 2, ! would agree thai Chief Archie Steacy should be ‘tproud of the et- fort his firefighters put into fighting the fire.’ However, I would not agree that those manag- ing the fire department budget should be so proud of theirs! Municipalities hesitate to allow extra off-duty firemen to be called in and wait even longer before re- questing aid from other cities because of the cost factor. The men at this fire definitely needed more help. The Vancouver firebout was available for use from the initial stages of the fire. The firebuat was not utilized and, because it was not, the resulting damage to the dock and the consequent air pollu- tion were much greater than they could have been. An opportunity was also lost to demonstrate to the people of Greater Vancouver and the news media tust how efficient this fireboaut ois. Tt vas specifically designed to tight dock fires of this type. At the very least a request should have been made for it to stand by at the scene in case the fire got completefy out of con- trol. To say that it was not needed at this or future fires is ridiculous. All fires eventually extinguish themselves if you wait long enough, but at what cost? It is ludicrous to try to fight a major industrial fire with 38inm (1'%4"') handlines when one of the most powerful fireboats in) the world lies idling at anchor just minutes away! The only outstan- ding record present at this fire is the cost to Vancouver Shipyards, Greater Vancouver is one of the busiest harbors in the world, end to try and save money by minimiz- ing both equipment and manpower will only result in a short-term sav- ing. The firefighters at this and all fires are brave men — why not Volunteers thanked Dear Editor: The North Shore Association for the Mentally Handicapped offers its warmest gratitude to everyone who canvassed for us, and to our zone captains who worked so hard in getting the kits out and the money returned to the office. Our thanks go espccially to all residents, from Deep Cove to Lions Bay, who gave so generously during our May 3lst to June 6 door-to-door campaign. The total to date is $60,300, up from $42,000 in 1986. The association is responsible for seven group homes in North Vancouver, a respite care home in Le RTs Sore West Vancouver and two workshops. When there are so many demands on residents due to government cutbacks in funding for social services, it is gratifying that the needs of the mentally handicapped are seen as essential. With your support we can con- tinue innovative programs that provide stimulation and new skills. Through this help, increasing numbers of those in our care are being accepted into the community at large. Evan Abercrombie sand Pamela MacDonald N.S.
