Jonasson; Spring 1995, Vel. 16, No. 1) B Thirteen Hinds —A play in ovo acts by Carol Shields (Winnipeg: Blizzard, 1993, $11.95) Arts Club production at Capilano College, Feb. 22-24 at 8 p.m. CAROL. Shields grew up in the same Chicago neigh- bourhood a: AEST Hemingway. “I very carly tormed the notion of being 3 writer,” she told inter- viewer Joan Thom 1995. “All the while know- ing that this was impossi- ble. Writers were like movie stars. Writers were men. Hemingway grew up in Oak Park, but aside from him I suspected that subur- bia did not produce writ- ers. My real life, as I saw it, was entircly predictable.” Not quite. The Winnipeg- based author raised five children yet still managed to create a body of work which to this point includes cight novels, two collections of short sto- ties, and three volumes of poctry. The Stone Diaries, pub- lished in 1993 by Random House, won many honers including the Governor General’s Award and the Pullitzer Prize. Her writing covers familiar themes but her approach takes the material to another level entirely. Narrative may centre on real situations but it is fictionalized and ends up on paper as poetic drama fron: a paraltel world. Shields’ daughter Anne Giardini describes in a Prairie Fire essay how her mother would pull out a spiral notebook and write something down during the chaos of family activity. Shields focuses on rhe small ceremonies and rituals of d: as acts of grace worth remembering. y lite ~~ John Goodman 2 Friday, February 19. 1999 — North Shore News — 29 NEWS photo Peul McGrath THE Altenburg Trio Wien from Vienna performed at Centennial Theatre Feb. 10, opening the North Shore Community Concerts Associaticn’s '99 season.
