Seymour school supp Friction over road access to NVD site By Jan Noble News Reporter A church congregation trying to get a school built on its Seymour lands was buoyed by a North Vancouver District council deci- sion Feb. 24. But others didn't like the way the decision was reached, ; Council gave third reading to a rezoning bylaw that would allow the construction of what will eventuaily be a Grade 1 to 7 school ar the St. Pius X Parish at the corner of Mount Seymour Road and Mount Seymour Parkway. “We're thrilled,” said parish building committee members Stephen O’Neill. “The bit of extra work (coun- cil) asked us to do is not a delay to the project at ali.” ‘ The rezoning bylaw had been controversial due to traf- fic concerns. Neighbors on bordering Brockton Crescent wanted a new exit built from the 1.5-hectare (3.8-acre) site to Mount Seymour Road. They worried that the 196 extra vehicles expected on Brockton Crescent when the school. reaches capacity in approximately five — years would arrive at times the street was already busy. In addition, residents said it was not appropriate to dump 200 cars on to Brockton at a point where the street curves and another street feeds to Brockton. An exit to Mount Seymour Road required a swap of land between the province and the district. Provincial approval for the swap had been antici- pated, but council took steps that indicate the swap may not be needed. Council passed a motion supulating that vehicies will only be allowed to enter from Mount Seymour Road and exit to Brockton Crescent. That doesn’t sit well with Brockton Crescent resident Deanne Mandell. She said council’s position does not add ess the safety concerns ained by the ‘acighbors. Mandell added) parents will still use Brockton to drop children off at the school be cause she suspects there will be vehicle lineups to get into the parish =ooff =~ Mount Seymour Road. Also, she said cotneil’s decision for the one-way traf- fic flow exiting to Brockton was made out of the public eye at a private session by council. “We didn’t get to see what they talked about because it was a done deal by the time they came our,” she said. “We'll go back to council with this if we see it’s not working but it’s very discour- aging.” Coun. Ernie Crist agreed a consensus was reached on the one-way proposal behind closed doors by councillors. But he added councillors spoke on the issue in public and the decisien and vote were made in public. “There’s no hanky panky going on. Irs nota decision that was made behind the backs of the public,” he said. Coun. Lisa Muri was the only councillor to vote against the proposal, O'Neill called the new traffic pattern a sninor change and the group hopes to de back in front of council in a few weeks fo get final approval tor the rezoning. “There’s no hanky- panky going on. Its not a decision that was made behind the backs of the public.” — Coun. Ernie Crist ONeill added the parish hopes to get 2 building permit tor the end of March and be ng the site in April.
