Paulette Mossop wants to add “drop, cover and hold” to our emergency-preparedness vecabulary. North and West Vancouver Emergency Program's neighborhood coordinator says that we need to know how to protect ourselves “when the shaking starts.” “We are overdue for an earthquake,” says Mossop, who teaches a step-by-step approach to emergency preparedness and response. Mossop offers her five-session program in a neighborhood setting, where 15 or so neigh- bors have come -together to .take the free course. The program is so popular it is booked through January. To make the program more widely accessible, Mossop is offering a separate course on “personal” preparedness. The course runs from 7 to 9 p.m.'on three consecutive Tuesdays, starting Oct. 22 at Carson Graham Secondary, Mossop says the goal is to equip participants with the skills and knowledge that will enable them to prepare in case of a disaster and to remain self-sufficient for up to 72 hours after: wards. The course covers what to do before, during and after a disaster. How and when to turn the gas off, having a prestocked safe supply of water and food, what fo put in an emergency kit, and what to do about sanitation will be covered. Mossop will also review “drop, cover and hold” — drop under a sturdy piece of furniture, cover vital organs and hold onto furniture — the best way to protect yourself during an earthquake. Mossop recognizes that must people don’ want to think about what to do when disaster strikes. “Ie makes them anxious,” she says. But she encourages everyone to be prepared. “We've been brought up to pick up the phone and dial 911 when there is trouble.
