Early instruction vital for Juniors THE QUESTION that I’m most often asked, is: “How do I get my child interested in playing goif?” By Dean Kunitz Contributing Writer If taught to a junior properly, golf may become a source of life- time enjoyment. fn this article Vil talk about golf equipment, concepts and instruction for junior players. Starting a junior golfer off on the right foot requires properly cut- down clubs. Five and seven irons are the most suitable clubs for beginners, since their shorter size will add loft to the young golfer’s shots. When beginners try to use a driver to hit balls in the air it often becomes an exercise in frustration. Learning the game of golf from a basic half swing or chipping stroke around the green often allows junior golfers to experience some accomplishment with the basic stroke. Young golfers can develop strength and coordination from this practice. Also, it teaches a full golf swing. Kids have the natural ability to pick up on the basics of the golf swing quickly. Eliminating bad habits of young golfers in the begin- ning is very important, since habits Cia in. DEAN KUNTZ become harder to break when the players get older. Golf should be learned through a golf instructor, When choosing an instructor for your child, try ta find one who specializes in teaching juniors. Some teachers have a personali- ty and technique that seems to click with younger golfers. This makes the learning process for your child more productive and enjoyable.
