MAILB Ox Drop your drawers, Doug Dear Editor: I write in response to Collins’ Aug. 5 column where he once again uses his interpretation of freedom of speech to indulge his mysogyny and homophobia. In his ‘Last Word’? on the issue of women and the right to bare one’s breasts, Collins is clearly unable to see the issue as anything other than one of sex- uality. This issue is not aboui sex. 1t is about the right to choose, and to have the same choices as those en- joyed by men. It is no different from the choice to wear shorts in hot weather, knowing full well that some of us, male or female, are closer than others to the fallacy of the ‘‘perfect body.’”’ The issue is also not about les- bians. It is about women, of any sex- ual orientation, who have the courage to speak up, paving the way for freedoms available to all women. If this movement was being spearheaded by lesbians, as Col- lins seems to think it is, | would ask him why attractiveness to men would even be a consideration. When will Collins realize that women come in all colors, shapes and sizes? His reference to breasts like ‘‘beagle ears’’ is insulting, to say the least. Women are sexual beings, not sexual objects to be castigated for their apparent failure to conform to a non-exis- tent norm. Collins consistently denegrates lesbians and gays in particular, and women ir general. 1 would suggest that Collins reflect on why he feels it necessary to do so. Collins appears to have tremen- dous concern for the shape, and size no doubt, of women’s breasis. To quote Robertson Davies, I would challenge this ‘‘wizened scrotum ninnyhammer’’ to drop his pants in order that we may judge how he compares with “beagle ears.”” Robbin Jeffery North Vancouver VSE has edge over bureaucracy Dear Editor: Herschel Hardin shows his dilettante West’ Vancouver social- ism when he trashes the Van- couver Stock Exchange in the in- terview you published, promoting his latest “pulp fiction,’’ The New Bureaucracy. The Vancouver Stock Exchange has created most of the mining wealth of this province and from that wealth we have the abun- dance of funds that allow the sub- sidy of Canadian authors such as Hardin. The VSE has given a much fairer chance of winning to the greedy and the desperate than the 6/49-type lotteries that his belov- ed bureaucrats dreamed up to tax the poor. Our national problem is not unity, it is bureaucracy and the unelected controllers of our lives. At least, if the advertising for Pepsi distresses us, we can always change brands and buy Clearly Canadian, Ber Ainsworth North Vanceuver Wednesday, August 12, 1992 - North Shore News ~ 7 NORTH VANCOUVER MUNI- CIPAL officilais have come under public scrutiny lately after It was revealed that some municipalities paid travel exponses for spouses travelling with civie politicians. The North Shore News asked 401 North and West Vancouver resi- dents, "Should municipalities pay ite expenses for spouses of civic politicians when travelling on civic business?" Just the facts, please Dear Editor: 1 am writing in support of your ongoing decision to continue Doug Collins’ column. Although I rarely completely agree with his point of view, ! believe that it is important that his view be voiced. His exaggerated view, is desperately needed to balance the overabundance of “politically correct’’ left-wing rhetoric spewed out by the daily newspapers, who have fost ail sense of impartiality. What ever happened to ‘‘just the facts’’? It will be a sad day when Mr. Collins is silenced. The only other editorial I’ve found worth reading is Trevor Lautens. A long life to you, Mr. Collins.
