Friday, July 31, 1992 - North Shore News ~— 17 Convert some space to give your guests their own place WHETHER YOU have a full- fledged guest room or simply a sliver of space and an open invita- tion, accommodating overnight guests need not be an extravagant undertaking. In fact, most guests would probably be satisfied with little more than a comfortable spot to sleep. The little niceties you can pro- vide to make guests feel right at home, however, are sure to be appreciated. If you don’t have a spare room designated for guests, search your imagination for all the places that can be coaxed into putting on company manners. Is there extra space in your home office or den? Can your at- tic or basement be developed into a spare room? Do you have a generous alcove where a foldaway bed could retire behind a free- standing screen? After all, hospitality is more a matter of how you accommodate your guests’ needs than where you do so. DGUBLE-DUTY BEDS If you don’t have the space for an extra bed, you can still ac- commodate overnight guests easily enough with furniture that pulls double duty. There’s a variety of space-saving alternatives available today that can be just as comfort- able as a traditional bed. One of the most common ways to create an instant guest room is with a sleeper sofa. Its split per- BEAT THe HEAT sonality makes it an excellent stand-in for a single-purpose sofa in a living room, family room or home office. Sleeper sofas have come a long way from the old, rock-hard models you may remember, To- day’s dual-personality pieces offer ‘ real bed comfort by night and high-style looks by day. A daybed is another good choice for a guest room. Typically used for sofa-like seating, a daybed can provide a place to lounge in even the most cramped quarters, Popular years ago, wall beds are now valued once again for their disappearing act. One of the most affordable beds is a Japanese futon, a cotton mattress that folds into an S- shape chair. Unfolded it turns into a bed that can be put on the floor or on a special frame. ROOM TO SPARE {f you’re fortunate enough to have a bedroom that's exclusively designated for guests, there are plenty of ways to make it both at- tractive and practical. For instance, what could be more inviting than a luxurious bed piled with plump pillows? You don’t have to spend a fortune making the room look like a hotel suite. Sheets that match or coor- dinate with a comforter or bedspread can help pull the room together; turn them into window treatments, table skirts, and other accessories. Think of ways to tern furniture you already own into guest-room stars. A wicker chest, for exam- ple, can serve as a bedside table as well as a spot to store linens. The same table used for sewing or paperwork can also make a fine desk for guests. Don’t despair if all you have to work with is twin beds. They can offer more flexibility than one queen- or king-sized bed. Use them separately or push them together. Reprinted with permission from Decorating Magazine.
