Board supplies Caulieild figures

Dear Editor:

Your front page story on June
10 carries a critique by J.
McDiarmid and T. Swan of the
Moodie Report commissioned by
West Vancouver School Board.
Some erroneous assumptions were
made and incorrect facts provid-
ed.

Cost estimates for the school at
Caulfeild were provided by IBI
(project) architects) and BTY
(quantity surveyors), not by
Moodie Consultants.

When Cunningham and Rivard
Appraisals (Vancouver) Ltd. were
contacted, it was stated that Mr.
Swan did not conduct an appraisal!

of Hillside, nor did he make a site
Visit.

Moodie cost projections for
Hillside redevelopment include:
site oregrading to enhance lot
views; an inflation factor of 3%
per annum applied to 1994 cost
projections from 1992. Mr. Swan
is quoted as saying that these are
excluded.

Mr. Swan emphasizes that the
school board must allow for a 15
to 20% ‘developer profit’ off the
top of revenues. The board has
not yet made decisions regarding
management and sale of the site.
We have, however, had reliable
evidence advocating an approach
that would not necessitate giving
away a 15 to 20%0 developer profit
but rather would maximize the net

lands transaction.

Mr. MeDiarmid states that he,
with other concerned West) Van-
couver residents, undertook this
research because they ‘twere un-
able to obtain clear answers to
questions raised with District 45
trustees."

Since late 1991 the board has
responded [to questions and
substantial correspondence from
interested citizens.

The project is complex; it re-
quires studies and consultation
with government. On June 8, with
principal feasibility studies com-
plete, the board devoted an entire
meciing to a presentation of the
facts to date and to responding to
a lengthy question period.

Dear Editor:

1 am a visitor from Bombay,
India, living with a Baha‘i family
on Nancy Greene Way. On my
maiden visit to Vancouver [am
convinged the wartd is one and its
people one.

1 boarded a Grayline bus from
Seattle which dropped me
downtown, A wonderful young
couple guided me to take the
SeaBus and then another bus to
go up to North Vancouver.

My travel became much easier
when FE imet Mike, the operator of
the #232 bus. He asked ine for the
address where J needed to go and
took me right to the doorstep —
even curried my baggage and bid
goodnight,

This kind of help and respect
for a stranger is unheard of in
other countries

Hats off to Canadian courtesy.
