Sunday, February 16, 1992 - North Shore News ~ 14 Board hears community school concerns CONCERNS OVER the future of community school pro- grams were raised Tuesday night at a North Vancouver District 44 board meeting as a report on community schools was presented to the board. The report was prepared by a committee with representation from board staff, the recreation commission and North Vancouver District. It was initiated by the board in October 1991 after North Vancouver residents expressed concern over a June 4, 1991 District 44 motion against pro- viding financial support for com- munity school services in 1992- °93. Many residents fear that the funding cut would threaten com- munity school services they have enjoyed for over 20 years. North Vancouver's Queen Mary Elementary became 8.C.’s first community school in 1970. There are currently nine community schools operating in District 44. Community schools differ from tegular schools in that they offer after-school courses using non- teacher instructors for a range of sports, arts, academic, and social! courses; they employ a community school coordinator who is respon- sible, according to District 44, “for the overall development, organization, coordination and evaluation of the community school program that serves the in- terests and needs of the children, youth and adults of the communi- ty school area,”’ After-school programs for children and youth will be most severely affected by cuts in com- munity school funding and the loss of the community school NEWS photo Neil Lucente By A.P.
