fj IT HAD to happen! With twice a. many families now living on the basis of two in- comes — one from dad and one from mom — the role of our dads has been enlarged and broadened. For the first time since the onset of the Industrial Revolution in 1750, our fathers are not just moral and ethical arbiters for the family, but they are pitching in to do a share of the cooking and cleaning chores, to help the children with their homework, to serve as moive than guardians and protectors of the family, their traditional and primary responsi- bility. Statistics show that almost 70 percent of mothers with children under 25 are now in the work force, doubling both as home- makers and as sources of added income, income needed by most families who aspire to the good life that our culture offers. But, of course, there is a price. Part of the price. and it’s for the good, is the ‘tre-integiation”’ of dad into all family activities. if mother, whether for econam- i¢ reasons or for selt-fulfilment, decides to return to the labor market, the management and household that were once solely her obligation, are now shared in good measure with dad and the kids. These chores range from washing dishes, to vacuuming the floor, to making beds, to getting food on the table for breakfast and dinner. This trend has been in the mak- ing for over two decades. It’s the product of new values, new standards, evolving technology and the fact that more women are going to, and graduating from, high school and college than ever Kids seeing more of both parents THERE’S AN increase in the number of single fathers support- ing children in their homes. This, in part, reflects a turn- about in the legal climate. Divorc- ed fathers are becoming more assertive of their rights in the bat- tle for custody. At least some influence is being exerted on the trend by working mothers, who no longer spend full-time at home bringing up the children. And often, a higher in- come level of the father can add weight to the dacd’s case. Mothers still gain custody in a vast majority of the cases but, where there is a contest, almost 70% of the time, custody is awarded to the father. In fact, there are now more than a million single fathers, and a third of them care for children under age six! Over the past several decades, there has been a strong trend toward fathers playing a more important role in the rearing of sheir children. And, it bodes weil for the children, who have the benefit of real participation by both parents. As more and more women join the work force, either out of eco- nomic necessity or desire for the fulfilment of their aspirations, some of the burden of household operation and managemeni has been shifted to fathers. Before the industrial revolu- tion, it was the father who liter- ally reared the children after they were weaned. It was only after fa- ther left hearth and home to work in factories and offices, that mother took on ihe roles of disciplinarian and guidance counsellor. As society continues to evolve, we can expect to see more situa- tions where fathers get custody of their children and, consequently, more households headed by single fathers who have the means and the willingness to commit themselves to this responsibility. before. Equal rights and equal oppor- tunities for mothers have, per- force, developed out of their ever-ereater contributions to the family infrastructure. So fathers, whose families benefit, from two incomes also benefit from two ‘full time” parents, each with an equal share in everything from dishes in the sink to money in che bank. Two-income families are better families for the combined con- tribution of two incomes, also benefit from two “full time’ parents, each with an equal share in everything from dishes in the sink to money in the bank. Two-income families are better families for the combined con- tribitions of both parents, and the dads who are fortunate to get such distaff support have more time, more energy and more motivation to be more than just the “guy who brings home the bacon.”’ Wednesday, June 12, 1991 ~- North Share News - 35 Family life experiencing (v= considerable changes Ou Bw Gift ideas for Dad IF DAD'S your hero, your role model, the man vou love to please show him this year when Fa- ther’s Day rolls around!
