WHEN IT comes to logging | got a
helluva lot of dry rot between the
ears — to borrow a phrase from
Bus Griffiths’ rough-talkin’ logging
saga Now You’re Logging, recently
re-released by Harbour Publishing.

Laid out in comic book style, the
book is all you ever wanted to
know about logging in the dirty
‘30s. Ilusteated with Griffith's own
grease pencil drawings, it’s a kind

of logging-cowboy story, complete
with romrmance and hard living and
footnotes explaining the logging
lingo.

In gritty language Griffiths tells
the story of Al Richards and Red
Harris, «who work in a small West
Coast truck-logging outfit during
the hungry years.

The tale is loaded with technical
details for all West Coast history
junkies. Griffiths is a stickler for
amhenticity and his explanations
are clear and concise.

Garber also discusses the pros
and cons of different methods of
payment and ways of ordering
(phone, mail or fax). Other topics
covered are the intricacies of
customs and import duties, courier
services, COD orders and sales
tax.

This last information is likely to
be useful to readers even if they
don’t end up buying fram any of
the over 300 mail-order sources
listed.

Given the tempting atray of
goods offered, however, readers
will be fortunate to escape without
purchasing at Jeast one or two
“must-have’’ items.

Woa, this guy knows his stuff.

Along with gruff foremen, the
near-disasters end hack-breaking
work, Griffiths manages to show
the human side of the loggers’
lives, especially the camaraderie of
partners Al and Red.

The love story is pure ‘30s mush,
and while Griffiths’ when-men-
were-men-generation might blush,
the younger generation will no
doubt gag. Al’s squeeze, “little
Debbie” spends most of her time
gazing into the sunset waiting for
her “Jogger man” to return and
sweep her off her feet.
