Departing MLAs get paid

B.C. taxpayers are on the hook for
severance allowances for 20 of the
province’s 32 departing MLAs.

- David Mitchetl, the former indepen-
dent MLA for West Vancouver-
Garibaldi, will pick up an estimated sev-
erance of $27,609, as calculated by the
Canadian Taxpayers Federation.

These former members have not yet
served the seven years required to quali-
fy for pension benefits.

The severance allowances are equal
to half their current annual pay.

The total severance bill to taxpayers
will be $646,166.

The government's legislation also
established an independent body to
determine future issues of remuneration
to MLAs, including pensions and sever-
ance allowances. That body and its com-
missioner are expected to be appointed
in the first sitting in Victoria.
