THINGS CHANGE pretty
slowly at the Jjagerhof, and
maybe that’s the key to its
continuing success.

Jagervolk know exactly what
they are going to get at the Lower
Lonsdale restaurant: big food on
big plates at relatively small prices.

The place is like an extended
family dining room for a lot of its
regular clientele, who come ‘<am
all over the North Shore to seek
out Jagerhof’s backwoods
Bavarian grub.

So why change a winning for-
mula? After all, the restaurant, with
Alex Doubrava at its culinary
helm, is closing in on its 10th year
in business — a mifestone for any
dining establishment.

Prior to my recent visit, | hadn’t
dined at the Jagerhof for about two
years, but, as | said, things do not
change much at the Lower Lons-
dale iocale: the old stuffed black
bear at the door hadn’t moved a
muscie ir: the interim; the rotund
chef character out front still look-
ed like Oliver Hardy; and the staff
and menu were still the same:

CLOSING OUT

A GENEROUS and meaty spread of schnitzel, Beer sausage, smoked
ham and smoked pork fain surrounds a chilled Warsteiner pilsner at
the Jagerhof. The Lower Lonsdale restaurant, which has been in
business for almost 10 years, is a local favorite with Bavarian food
fans,

familiar and reliable.

Menu is divided basically in two.
Side One — Specialities —
features steaks, stews (ragouts to
Jagervolk) and sausages (wursts,
mein Herr). Side Two is all
schnitzel — 13 in all, ranging from
the classic Wiener to such varia-
tions on the pounded and breaded
veal theme as Malaspina, which

comes stuffed with smoked salm-
on and cheese. There's even the
Expo 86 schnitzel, still sizzling
away two years after ali those fond
memories of that international fair

from $8 to $11 witha few dishes
straying up to $15.

Meals are not fancy. They are
simple and substantial: no kitchen
ballet here — more a Blue Danube
Waltz in hiking boots.

1 began with a Caesar Salad
($3.45).

It included fresh Romaine !et-
tuce and a reasonably lively dress-
ing with a well-balanced blend of
anchovy, garlic and Parmesan
cheese. The only disappointment
were the croutons, which tasted
store-bought and uninteresting. |
tust after big, fresh, crunchy oil-
rich bread cubes, which add little
to kitchen workloads but a lot to
any salad.

Feeling in a festive mood, |
followed Caesar with a Reindeer
Steak ($14.95). It came served
beneath a basic brown ‘game’
sauce that had a pronounced
onion accent.

Accompanying the family-sized
slab of meat was a melange of
cauliflower and carrots and a gen-
erous mound of thick cottage fried
potatoes.

The reindeer meat was similar to
steak, slightly more gamey, but not

My wife’s Jager schnitzel ($7.95
for the small, $9.95 lagge) oc-
cupied most of her plate even
though the order was only the
small version.

Another big meal, but the Jager’s
special mushroom sauce also
tasted somewhat store-bought
sayeth the wife, with whom no-
body argues.

Service at the fagerhof remains
quick and informal.

Jagerhof continues to dish out
good basic blue-collar Bavarian
food that is immune to the
capricious ravages of time and
trends.
