Nissan’s 1989 modelis
offer Head Up Display

NISSAN IS the first in the world
to offer a new safety option on
two cf its 1989 models.

Known as Head Up Display, it is
optional on certain Maxima sedans
and 240SX sports cars to be of-
fered for sale in Canada.

First used in high-performance
aircraft, Head Up Display projects
images of vital information on to a
specially-coated patch of wind-
screen in front of the pilot or
driver.

In Nissan’s Head Up Display,
the image projected is a blue-green
digital readout from the
speedometer.

It is equally readable by day or
night and lets the driver monitor
the car's speed without taking his
eyes off the ruad ahead.

The readout can also be turned
on or off, dimmed or brightened,
or switched from kilometres per
hour to miles per hour — a conve-

U.S. border.

In testing its effectiveness,
Nissan researchers found Head Up
Display reduced drivers’ eye mov-
ements, lessened fatigue and
shortened the time needed to check
the car’s speed by nearly 30 per
cent.

They also found that a Head Up
Display can reduce a driver’s reac-
tion time by more than one tenth
of a second compared to conven-
tional instrumentation.

Using prototype systems, test
subjects were able to shorten their
average metre recognition time —
the time it takes to read a display
and return the eyes to the original
tines of sight — from 0.47 seconds
to 0.34.

Head-up displays are widely us-
ed in military and commercial
aviation, where they are often
known by the acronym HUD.
