It is with that market in mind the Capilano College is offering a new part-time Tourism Manage- ment Certificate Program starting in January 1988. There are 11 courses in the full program, from January to May and September to December 1988. Tourism program coordinator. Brian White sees a bright future for the tourism industry in B.C. “It has the greatest potential for small business development of any industry in Western Canada,”’ he said, ‘and it has the greatest range of potential products of any in- dustry.’ The following are among the benefits of tourism enumerated by White: it is labor intensive thus creating employment; it is en- vironmentally appropriate; and it has a high economic generator ef- fect on other industries. ‘B.C. is developing an interna- tional destination reputation, and there is an increasing need for people — especially trained super- visors and managers — with inter- national tourism skills,’ said White. A prerequisite for the Tourism Management Program is experi- ence in some aspect of the tourism industry, such as working in ‘front-line’ occupations at hotels, restaurants, tour agencies, ski areas, resorts, or adventure tourism operations. The program is also geared for people who are interested in starting their own tourism business.
