The four pro-life directors were voted in, two from West Vancouver, one from North Van City and one from North Van District. PRO-LIFE TAKES FOUR HOSPITAL SEATS From Page 1 put their beliefs into action. “I've lost four excellent board members, especially Bill Crompton my vice- chairman, all of whom have had a very long service to our community. “Democracy is eroded by apathy,”’ Clark continued, “and 1 worry about the future, not only of our community, but of our country,” Speaking on a more posi- tive note, Clark said, ‘‘I feel there can be good repercus- sions from the success of the pro-life candidates elected, if the candidates come forward and work for the board and with the hospital on a broad base of concern. Four tal- ented people were elected with skills the board can use. But Clark added: ‘‘My concern is from experience — when pro-life was on the board, they used the board discussions to put forward anti-abortion, anti-choice points of -view. This could make the board divisive and unproductive. “We still have a legal suit pending against all the doc- tors who have ever served on the therapeutic abortion committee brought on by two pro-life ex-board members. And this could pose some difficulties,’’ she said, Newly elected candidate Colleen Donald said she felt the election was repre- sentative of what people want. ‘YT believe the community at large is expressing their coacern and their dissatisfaction of the pro- choice position,’’ Donald said, ‘‘That’s obvious. The community has demon- strated they want a respon- sible position taken.” Donald said her priorities on the abortion issue will be to have counselling and in- formed consent. “ft think those are ap- propriate procedures for a hospital,’’ she said. °'! think the (abortion) procedure should be explained in detail as to the possible side ef- ‘fects. Having an abortion isn’t like having a vaccina- tion. We'd like to discourage people from having their se- cond and third abortion.’’ Talking about the fetus, Donald said: ‘‘We have a human life. Do we attribute tights to that life? Do we ‘give it personhood? Abor- tion is a conflict of rights to that child. We have to look at the whole medical, social and legal ramifications. If we don’t admit there’s a human life, then all we have are the slogans and the diatribe. The factual infor- mation is the antidote to emotional incontinence. “It’s important to move away from the polarization and battling. It's not the way we’re going to resolve our problems. If we fight, everyone loses.** Another concern of Donald’s is the balancing of staff and new technologies, SLICED BLACK FOREST HAM oOPTRESY FOR YOU! Per- sonal care is the most valuable in keeping people well,”’ Hospital president John Borthwick said the number of hospital society members increased this year by about 1,000 members, “Most of the new people were recruited by the Pro- Life group,’’ Borthwick said. ‘‘The voting clearly in- dicated it was on the abor- tion issue. The four (pro-life directors) are still a minori- ty, though, but I’m sure they'll do what they can. — They'll probably show themselves more on_ this issue.’’ .
