The two of- fices available have been held by the North Shore Women’s Centre, which is looking for a larger head- quarters on lower Lonsdale. Capilano Community Ser- vices and its umbrella of social services will have worked out of the Delbrook Centre two years this September. Originally located in the old firehall in Edgemont Village, the groups needed to find a new home when the village’s renewal project was planned. After Delbrook School burnt down and was reconstructed, the North wing seemed a natural location for the agencies. “It’s valuable to have ser- vices in a visible building in the community,’’ Gilmour says, ‘‘accessible to those needing it. A network develops between the agencies. It’s a human ser- vice orientation, a Sharing of SECTION FASHION « FOOD TRAVEL Agency office opening IF YOU BELONG tto a social service or non- profit organization, and your group is in need of a home, Capilano Community Services has office resources and information.’’ Acting in a management role, Capilano Services works as a liaison between the agencies and the Recre- ation Commission, which runs the building, taking care, for example, of leaks or ants in the building and booking meetings in the available rooms or halls. Working for the community, Capilano Ser- vices provides a babysitting registry, a volunteer driving service, a seniors’ phone check, a newsletter advertis- ing people’s needs, such as housing requirements, and an information service on community, recreational and social events. Gilmour, whose salary is paid by the Ministry of Human Resources, has 10 volunteers working for her at the reception desk, who answer the phone, type and do administrative tasks. The reception is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., so the volunteers fill two 3%-hour shifts per day, five days a week. ‘‘All of our volunteers are varied, each with different interests and backgrounds.’’ Any non-profit organiza- tions interested in obtaining office space at Delbrook Community Centre, North Building, 600 West Queens, North Vancouver, should call Sheila Gilmour at 988- 7115.
