Ao - Friday, April 20, 1984 - North Shore News Theory vs. facts reader's letter on the opposite page questions the benefits obtained by the large sums of money donated to the Canadian Cancer Society. The News disagrees with some of the writer’s implicit conclusions but, at the same time, he does raise certain though-provoking points about our modern industrial society. Mr. Moelaert claims too much cancer money is going into diagnosis and attempted cures, and not nearly enough into PREVENTION. He cites World Health Organization statistics indicating that some 80% of all cases are environmentally caused by cancer-inducing agents in food, water and air, and he accuses government and_ the Cancer Society of ignoring these preventable factors because ‘‘corporate wealth (is) more important than public health’’. Theoretically he is doubtless right, but the practical implications are mind-boggling. Cleaning up the environment on that scale would presumably mean the banning of all carbon-fuel engines, all factory emissions, all chemical preservatives in food, all nuclear plants, many public waste disposal systems and most electronic devices (including TV sets and computers) not to mention tobacco, alcohol and other drugs. If that’s the ultimate price of banishing cancer, we're obviously not yet prepared to pay it. Concentration on early diagnosis and the ongoing search for cures, therefore, remains for the moment the only realistic alternative. We believe it should continue to be supported generously, especially during this *‘Cancer Month” of April. Church ads next?
