Having fun going downhill THE WHISTLER Festival Society is putting Whistler, B.C. on the international map with the staging of a ma- jor winter festival from March 7-11, 1984. The five day Winterfest will culminate in the final race of the 1984 BASF, FIS Men’s World Cup -Downhill Race sponsored in Canada by Molson’s. (This is one of the events planned for the | first annual Whistler Winterfest.) The calendar of events in- cluding snow golf, an ice sculpture contest, cross coun- try ski race or just fun races scheduled for Blackcomb and Whistler Mountains will ap- peal to all ages and interests. Beer gardens, casinos and feature entertainment will complement the busy day- time and evening schedule. The Provincial Govern- ment has been invited to host B.C. Night complete with a salmon barbeque and log- ger’s show. Pomp and pagen- try will attend the Opening Ceremonies and the Winterfest Grand Ball; the torchlight parade and fire- works will add a touch of magic to the festival air. The Society’s members are the Resort Municipality, the Chamber of Commerce, the Whistler: Mountain Ski Corporation: The Challenge taken up by the Festival Society is to’build Whistler into the largest and best winter-festival in Canada within five years, and create’ the focal point of the winter season at Whistler Village. in the first year, over 75,000 visitors are expected to join the festivities. Another million plus will be watching through the eyes of the cameramen of the CBC TV Canada and the NBC Sports World through the United: States. Word has it that feeds are expected to be picked in Europe. The Whistler Winterfest is generating international in- terest in the Whistler area. This will further its reputa- tion as a world class destina- tion resort. The long term goal of the Whistler Festival Society is to provide an an- nual winter festival coupled with a major ski competition in the intervening non-world years. This will bencfit Whistler, B.C. businesses and the tourism industry.
