The community’s first annual Coho Festival gets under way at Ambleside Park Sunday morning with 12 hours of fun and en- tertainment winding up at 10 p-m. Sponsored by the West Van Chamber of Commerce, the formal purpose of the event is to celebrate the return of the coho run to the Capilano River. It is not a fishing derby. Barring emergency calls, the Coast Guard hovercraft will be on hand and available for in- spection. A non-stop salmon bar- becue will be operating from 1! a.m. to 7 p.m. in the swimming pool area. Walks conducted by naturalists are being arranged along the Capilano trail to the fish hatchery. Special festival balloons will be on sale, with proceeds going to North Shore high schools for salmonid enhancement programs. The evening hours from 7 to 10 p.m. will be devoted to a “folk festival” based on the beach — with bands, singing, story-telling and other forms of en- tertainment. The show will go on, rain or shine.
