Also star- ring Nathan Lane, Natascha McElhone, Alicia Silverstone and Matthew Lillard. WHEN was the last time you tapped your toes to Shakespeare? Kenneth Branagh, that modern ambassador of Shakespeare, combines one of the Bard’s more difficult plays with show tunes, resulting ina bumpy yer watchable version of Love’s Labaur’s Last. Branagh has already brought Henry V, Much Ado About Ni rothing, Othello and Hamlet to the screen, but this is his most ambitious project yet. It's a marriage of Shakespeare’s play in its original, albeit truncated, form and musical num- bers by Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and Gershwin, alf set as the NATHAN Lane and Stefania Recco in a scene from Love’s E : Labour’s Lost. That makes the film a tough sell: Shakespearean scholars will hate it because the play has been hacked to bits to fit a feature-length for- mat and to make way for the musical numbers. Truc fans of musicals will groan the moment Branagh opens his mouth in song, or shake their heads watching Alicia Silverstone, who makes 2 poor Ginger Rogers indeed. Most of the actors have limited musical theatre experience but it’s largely endearing. Silverstone is the Princess of France, who is vexed when she pays a state visit to the King of Navarre (Alessandro Nivola) only to discover he’s sworn an cath to avoid female company during three yrars of intense study. The King has persuaded three friends (Adrian Lester, Matthew Lillard and Branagh) to join him in a life uf scholarship over courtship. But the men regret their decision when they’ spy the Princess and her beautitul ladies-in- waiting (Carmen Ejoge, Natascha McElhone. and Emily Mortimer). Nathan Lane and Timothy Spall ( (Secrets and Lies) provide the requisite comic relief until it is decided that |. love creates a fertile state of mind for study. If you liked Woody Allen's Everyone Says I . Love You, chances are you'll enjoy Branagh’s lacest offering. It is far from seamless, but: Branagh gets an “A” for effort. with another =. ~ fresh and clever way to bring Shakespeare to, = the masses. f HILLSIDE BAPTIST CHURCH - 870 Lyan Valley Road, N North Van] ‘| 10am - Morning ship « Nursery & Childrens Pros ae toage 12 VBS July 17-21 ve Pastoss John Handy Job Cuddeford . a Youth Pastor Ken Best * .
