However, as we get older, our lives may
become more stressful. Thanks to all the

advances in medical treatment, we are able.

more success then did our. grandparents,

“way we live becomes limited in many ways.

drive at all. Our beautiful raountainside
community causes problems when we
want to leave our homes to go shopping,
to church, social events, or to a medical
appointment. Bus service is planned with
the city commuter in mind — those of us

‘who. need to travel around the North
* Shore are wut of luck.

Another potential problem is housing.
Many of us, myself included, moved to
the North Shore when we wanted 3 pleas-

-ant neighborhood with good schools and

recreation services. We wanted a good

. place to raise our large families.. Now that

our children are on their own, we empty-
nesters may find that looking after a big
house and yard is getting to be a chore. If
we have arthritis or balance problems, gar-
dening, cooking, and house cleaning
become more difficult.

- Whar is the answer? An apartment with
an elevator will suit many older, frail peo-
ple. Ideally, the building would be located

on a bus route and close to shopping and
- recreation.

Unfortunately, the North
Shore does not have a lot of land available.
What there is, is expensive. Federal and
provincial support that, in the past,

enabled service clubs to build affordable
seniors’ housing has been cut.

So we are left with a situation where
many seniors, most often single women,
are living alone. Since most of us want to
stay in our own homes, not in nursing
homes, we may become isolated and lone-
ly. Many older women find it a chore. to

.- ¢ook nutridous meals with nobody to

share and appreciate our efforts. So tea
and toast will do.

If all this sounds discouraging, don’:
despair. We are living much longer than
our grandparents did, and in spite of limi-

tations, can usually manage to make this’,

time of life both happy and stimulating.

caring community has avaitable to make
the lives of seniors more. rewarding.
