Hawkshaw, City Clerk T Y A POOLISH IDEA t— ~ Ifyou are looking for a different hiking experience this weekend, you ;’ / might want to visit our two new fisheries. enhancement ‘pools in [- Mosquito Creek Park! Just completed last month by ‘the City ‘of. North pf Vancouver, these “rest-stops” have already been discovered: by’ our. North = Shore finned friends. The refuge is made up of heavily-vegetated pools: designed for spawning salmon and their fry. Each pool consists of ‘a aide’ channel yy connecting Mosquito Creek with a deeper “ respite pond” or pool. The pool, “= which is 100 metres long by 30 metres across, is filled with root loge-and old branches, creating a place for fish to rest and conceal themselves on their way " a2 up and downstream. oe p> FISHY HIDE-OUT Both young and old can “hide out” in the pools during a storm, protecting them from we floodwaters thet would otherwise sweep them out to sea. They are also kept safe from — predators there, Once the water becomes calm, the spawning salmon continue up to the - spawning ground and the fry head out to sea. In summer, when the temperature rises’. ‘above 18°C and Mosquito Creek is low, the deep pools provide a cool refuge f for the fish. . >> COME SEE FOR YOURSELF If you would like to visit the pools for some “fish-watching”, just park at 16th Street. Cross the bridge over Mosquito Creek and then choose the eas: or west pathway. Continue upstream and you'll find the pools around 19th Street. You can also visit our new fish ladder, which was just constructed last year over the GVRD sanitary sewer on Mosquito Creek. This man-made “waterfall” lets the fish jump up into a series of boxes to get to their spawning grounds. The ladder is located on Marine Drive near Fell Avenue.
