THE highways ministry will team up
with the commercial truck transport
industry and unions to participate in
a joint task force on truck safety.

The move was announced by Highways
Minister Lois Boone.

Among the areas to be examined:

improved enforcement of regulations
nidreding the mechanical condition of com-
mereial vehicles;
@ improved driver licensing, standards;
8 improved auditing processes for inspection
facilities.

The initiative comes in the wake of a coro-
ner’s inquest of a North Vancouver accident
that caused the death of two men last year on
the Cut portion of the Upper Levels Highway,

The jury considered the Aug. 16, 1995,

deaths of Wayde Police and Baljinder Singh.

Singh was at the wheel of an apparently
brakeless semi-trailer truck rig when it went out
of control.

On Sept. 5 Allied Shipbuilders employee
Robert Vandendriessche died after his over-
loaded dump truck plunged into the water in
Gibsons.

According to Gibsons RCMP the driver
missed a gear while on a steep hill, The air
brakes on the speeding vehicle failed.
