Reg Bibby, a well- known sociology pro- fessor at the University of Lethbridge, is the guest speaker at ute yearly meeting of the B.C. Synod of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, The Svnod meetings will take plice today, Friday, Qet, 18 to Sunday, Oct. 2Q-at St. Andrew's and St. Stephen's Presbyterian churches in North Vancouver. Dr. Bibby is the author of several best selling books, including Fragmented Gods, Unknown Gods and There's Got to be More. A person whe loves life and vahies faith, Dr. Bibby has con- ducted major studies for the Anglican and United Churches in Canada and is completing a similar work for the Cumberland Presbyterian denomination in the United States. Dr. Bibby will share his research findings and current information concerning the problems and possibilities program receives funding from NV A donation from the District of North Vancouver will allow the Red Cross Abuse Prevention Services (APS) program to continue its reach across the North Shore. During the 1995/96 school year, APS volun- teers reached over 3,500 students at eight schools on the North Shore. “The interest in this program is phenomenal, and the donation from the District of North Vancouver will help us with our goal to eventu- ally reach every North Shore student,” says Red Cross APS Coordinator Barbara Bain. “The tragedy of child abuse in our society is well-doe- umented, and education is the key to stopping the cycle ‘of abuse.” The Red Cross Abuse Prevention Services Program is a recommended resource of the Ministry of Edueation’s Career and Personal Planning curriculum. It targets teens using an approach to which they can relate. Abuse Prevention Education volunteers offer two different presentations. “It's Not Yeur Fault” targets adolescents and deals with emo- tional, physical and sexual abuse and explains how to recognize each kind of abuse, why it might occur, and where and how to go for help. The second presentation — “What's Love Got To Do With 127 —~ deals with preventing date and relationship violence. Teens are told sexual and physical assault are against the law, and are given suggestions on haw to avoid becoming both a victim and aggressor, A Health Canada study of the APS program in 1994 found sru- dents who had received the abuse prevention presentation had a significantly higher under- standing of abuse concepts —~ this was particu larly the case for boys. Many girls reported the program helped them assist cither themselves or another person who was a victim of abuse.
