The group was struck to address the numerous complaints and con- cerns expressed by residents who were finding homes built in their neighborhood were bulky, ap- peared oversized on the fot, were too close to the property lines, blocked views and sunlight and — in infill situations — did not con- form with neighborhood character. in the latter half of that year a status report was presented to council which recommended zon- ing bylaw changes. These dealt with the definition of grade for determining height and removed the opportunity to manipulate the grade on a site. The key question was: ‘‘What good are building height limita- tions if we don’t know from where they are measured?’? The new bylaw definition measures height from ‘the lesser of existing or finished grade.”” Bylaw changes to retaining wall and sideyard heights were also im- plemented. Council then approved the hir- ing of consultants to work further with the task force. The issues are not simply resolv- ed and we have found that oftimes a solution to one problem creates a whole new set of different prob- ine Nevertheless, with the hard work of a volunteer group of individuals representing our Advisory Plan- FROM THE expanded progiam up and running in North Vancouver and beyond. Given the disgusting statistic that Canadians, per capita, are among the world’s greatest pro- ducers of garbage, we are having to carefully re-examine our con- suming ways. I arn confident that our citizens are ready and willing to participate in a full recycling program but it must be one that is sustainable. Markets for the goods must be confirmed beforehand and the best collection and handling methods determined. Stay tuned! IN REVIEW Among the many voices of sup- port (some 60 per cent of our resi- dents) for the district’s recently in- troduced wheeled waste carts, sev- eral people have commented nega- tively. Their concern is that we appear to be encouraging more garbage in these capacious containers rather than reducing, reusing and recycl- ing to produce less. That is certain- ly not the case. The wheeled carts are purchased by those who find them convenient and pest-proof. Personally, I am delighted to no longer fight the rapacious raccoon populace over entry into our gar- bage can. They simply can’t get in. And dogs can’t tip them. And garden clippings and branches can fit in. And I don’t have to put them out every week. And it is not a back-breaking chore to get them down our driveway to the curb. And they come in two sizes to fit every need. In fact, Seattle’s South Side recycling program uses them for collection as opposed to the North Side use of Blue Boxes and source ell SO ‘2 a> a an de bp oe presents FOOTWEAR in their new store opening Saturday, April 8 PRESCRIPTION ORTHOPEDIC separation.
