Q.: Why do dogs have anal
glands? All thay do is fill up and
make clogs scoot,

Dr. J: For those people unfamil-
iar with dog anatomy, there are
two glands, each the size of a
grape located just inside the
anus (one on the leit and one on
the right).

Anal glands produce a foul-
smelling fluid that plays an
important rofe in marking territo-
ty. Each time a dog has a bowel
movement, a small amount of
anal gland tiquid is secreted
onto the stool. Other dogs check
out this odour to identify the indi-
vidual who left it. This is also
why dogs will smell each other
under the tail as an iniroduction.
Anal glands that fail to drain may
become overfilled or impacted.
The dog's natural response to
the resulting irritation is to drag
it's bottom on the ground in a
comical attempt to empty the
glands. Many people mistakenly
think worms cause this scooting
behaviour.

drain the glands, providing dogs

get to look into their mouths.
Since we can easily examine
our pets’ mouths, we can identi-
fy problems and alleviate the
suffering associated with them.

Bad taeth, which in cats means
cavities, gum disease and tarter,
can cause disease elsewhere in
the body. Bacteria that grow in
the mouth may be inhaled into
the lungs or be absorbed into
the bloodstream. These bacteria
