44 - Wednesday, June 9, 1999 - North Shore News Bob Mackin News Reporter MOUNTAIN bikers from Argyle and Handsworth secondaries rode in style at the B.C. champi- onships — thanks to Bicycle Sports Pacific. The 10-year-old Lynn Valley store sup- plied 130 custom cycling jerseys, worth $12,600 at rerail, for free. “These are not simply store jerseys,” said Michacl Thell, who owns Bicycle Sports Pacific with wife Wendy. “Rather, cach jersey was custom designed using school colours and team input.” The jerseys contain small logos for Bicycle Sports Pacific and suppliers like helmet maker Bell Sports Canada, bike manutactur- ers Cannondale and Giant, and shoe compa- ny Airwalk. Thel!’s employees also provided safety checks and maintenance during all high school races on the North Shore. “As a parent on the North Shore I am aware that school budgets are shrinking,” said Thell, an Argyle graduate. “I therefore belicve schools will increasingly have to look to corporate sponsors to help with the cost of extracurricular activities.” North Vancouver school board chair Doug MacKay-Dunn wishes there were more businesses like Thell’s. “Anyone that wants to assist with the sports program we're going to look very carefully a:. We're certainly not going to stand in the way as long as the needs of the children have been met and nothing has been compromised.” A 1967 school board regulation, which was reviewed in 1988, said principals must ensure schools aren’t used to display, distribute or advertise a product, scrvice or function on behalf of a person, business or organization, unless: @ the display will not lead to the exploitation of students; Don’t pay until the year aa | Ic the world ends, papa’s ees got a new set o€ tires! MacKay-Dunn said the school board strives for equity throughout a district where there is both affluence and pover- ye Sponsorship must be used to encourage overall participation rather than reward a small number of elite athletes, he added. “A lot of kids out there have the natural ability but they don’t have the opportunity,” he said. “We've got to make sure everybody gets the same kick at rhe cat.
