On Thursday, June 3, Lions Bay resident Troy Gienger was driving west along the Upper Levels High- way when he saw a 1988 Mercedes 5605 convertible in a ditch near the Westmount interchange. Flames were coming through the front hood, the front wheels of the car were burning and sparks and fire were coming from the exhaust pipe. The driver of the car was slumped over the steering wheel. Gienger and the other man risked their lives to pull the injured man from the burning vehicle just before it exploded. Speed chase A 16-year-old youth faces charges of possession of stolen property and engaging police in a high-speed pursuit fol- lowing an incident at 6:45 p.m. on Sunday, June 6. A North Vencouver RCMP spokesman said 2 police dog handler saw a motorcyclist fail to halt at a stop siga in the area of 17th Street and Grand Boulevard. The officer also saw that the driver of the motorcycle was not wearing a helmet. The police attempted to pull the motorcycle over but a high-speed chase ensued. Speeds reached 80 km/h (50 mph). The suspect abandoned the motorcycle af the corner of 10th Street and Grand Boulevard. arrested al the scene. But Rice Lake Road resident Allan Rylott was not persuaded by the staff recommendations. “How many crossings do we need in this area?’’ Rylott asked the committee. He suggested that if a bicycle bridge was required that it be built adjacent to the park’s suspension bridge. But municipal engineer John Bremner told the committee that building the crossing next to the suspension bridge would result in a significant number of park trees being removed to make way for the heavy machinery needed for the project. He added that extensive regrading of the trail system would also be required for a bicy- cle route from Ross Road. And many Lynn Valley residents favor the proposed bridge at the pipeline crossing. Dempsey Road resident Gordon Ellis said that his children, without his approval, presently use the pipeline bridge. In a letter to council, Ellis wrote, “It is not a safe way to cross the river. If the building of the bridge saves one serious acci- dent, it will have paid for itself.’’ The Save Lynn Canyon Park Association supports the bridge proposal. It has asked council to decide ‘‘in favor of the many and not the few.”” President Maureen Bragg argues that ‘‘the cycle link to the Seymour Demonstration Forest will take pressure off the suspen- sion bridge area. “We would suggest that it not be publicized as a crossing but rather be left as a place for Lynn Valley residents to ride to and Upper Lynn residents to walk to from their homes.” The committee recommended that council authorize construction of the bridge but asked staff for a parking study of the area and a written response from the GVRD. Step in right direction - Schreck From page % hate literature, but it’s hard to define hate literature. Hate literz- ture will be anything they (NDP) don’t like,’ said Collins. But North Vancouver-Lonsdale NDP MLA. David Schreck sup- ported the amendments and dismissed Collins’ comments. “1 think it’s a step in the right direction to control hate literature. If Doug Collins feels he falls into that category, then that’s a prob- lem for him and his editors at the North Shore News,’ said Schreck. West Vancouver-Garibaldi MLA David Mitchell called the wording of the amendments “vague,"’ He said they could violate the Canadian Charter of Human Rights, ‘We already have laws in place to protect against hate literature. 1t will only allow the thought police to interfere with. free speech,’’ said Mitchell, Friday, June 11, 1993 ~ North Shore News - 5 NVC supports motion to have Young Offenders Act reviewed NORTH VANCOUVER City councillors lent their support Monday, June 7, to a drive to have the Young Offenders Act reviewed by the justice minister. They were responding to a call from the Village of Belcarra, across Indian Arm from Deep Cove. Council there says the act is being exploited by young offend- ers. But while city council supported Belcarra’s move for a review of the act, a majority of councillors said they could not support two clauses in the proposed motion. One clause said the act “is inade- quate for the needs of modern society."’ A second clause, stating that “young offenders appear to enjoy an extraordinary status under this act,’ was also voted down by council. Said Coun. Stella Jo Dean, “The politicians in Ottawa are not listening.
