hiring a new fire chief fol-
lowing the announced
retirement of Chief Colin
Evans.

Evans, 59, will be leaving the
job in April.

He took on the position of fire
chief in West ‘Vancouver on Jan.
15, 1978.

Evans rode his first fire engine
at age 18, when he worked for

’ Cominco as an’ industrial volun-
teer firefighter ..in Kimberley: in
_ 1956 he joined the town volunteer
° fire department and in 1957 ° he
became a professional firefighter
_ in Kimberley.
He left Kimberley in 1967 to
take on a job as assistant commis-
sioner for the Red Cross Society,
B.C, and Yukon Region.
_Evans worked overseas for the
- Red Cross in South America. On
loan as a league delegate for the
- League of Red Cross Socicties,
: Evans worked in India.

In 1974..he became executive
. director. for the Keenleyside Inqui-

Evans was then hired by the
federal Liberal party as executive
director of its treasury committee.

He was a fundraiser in B.C. for
the federal party under Trudeau.

Said Evans, “‘} knew nothing
about politics, but they knew
about my record as a fundraiser
for the Red Cross.

“In those days it was Ron
Basford and Ray Perrault. They
invited me to lunch and | guess
one thing led to another and 1
took a job with them. Actually
they were a very good employer,”
he said.

While with the Liberals he
chaired the advisory fire panel for
West Vancouver as a volunteer.

“The fire chief job came up
and they hired me,’’ Evans said.

Under Evans the fire depart-
tnent has grown substantially.

“When { started here it was a
composite (some volunteer, some
professional members) depart-
ment. Today it’s a professional
fire department,” he said.

His replacement faces several
challenges in the immediate
future.

‘YT think the major challenge
will be to mould the department
into the municipal environment of
the development. that is taking
place. There is a trend to multiple

education, not only on the North
Shore, but in all regions of B.C.,”’
said Perry.

College president Dr. Doug
Jardine said the building is the
next major step in the develop-
ment of the, college’s master site
plan to improve and expand facil-
ities. ‘ .

“It will provide us with greatly
improved student services and
food: areas and a_ performing
theatre,”’ said Jardine.

something that’s in the books. It’s
something the politicians have said

ly knows, I've been working on it,
but f haven’t succeeded in it, and
it’s too late now,” he said.
