College Singers made debut with CBC-Radio performance From page 38° “this year it has mushroomed to _ 130. voices. Two years ago, Kaario started a a children’ s choir because, other “than the school programs, there wasn’t a children’s concert ‘ensemble in North Vancouver. Today he has tripled the size of ' the group, boosting it to 27 voices. The mere advanced perfo:- mance ensemble, the Capilano ‘College Singers, is part of the col- lege’s university transfer program. When Kaario joined the college’s teaching staff, the group didn’t even have a name. Under Kaario the Coliege _ Singers have performed with the Vancouver Chamber Choir in the Orpheum Theatre, and twe years " ago they made their debut with the Vancouver Bach Choir and Vancouver Symphony Orchestra on CBC-Radio in 8.C.’s first per- formance of Gustav Mahler's 8th Symphony. Kaario says the experience of performing on stage with 500 voices was a rare moment for his students. “My people said it changed their lives.’’ Directing three choirs doesn’t leave much time for performing, but Kaario stil] manages to give the occasional solo recital. “Being a director, you‘re at . arm’s length from singing. | do miss it.’” One of the great appeals of join- ing a choir is the recreational aspect; it’s also relaxing and in- spiring, says Kaario. “think singing is good for your psyche and your spirit. To sing is a very special thing because you are the instrument. Singing br- ings people together. it has a way of touching people.” ; Fast relief for the best stressed. couple ‘Speciai weekend getawa y!
