Open men’s winner Peter Findlay of Kamloops posted a time of four hours, 45 minutes, improving upon last year by a stunning 30 minutes. Mary Nicell of Vancouver won the open women's division in 6:39, beating her record by four minutes, while the masters men's division was won by Neil Wakelin of North Vancouver in 5:38 — 17 minutes better than last year. Gail Bazeiey cf Coquitlam won the masters women’s event in 5:24, and Joe Marchand of Westbank won the 50+ men’s division in 6:44. Masters runners made a strong showing overall, claiming six of the top thirteen spots. Findlay led from the start, and by half-way had opened up a 12-minute gap on Brian Nemethy and Ron Wichmann. Nemethy pulled slightly ahead of Wichmann during the third quarter of the race, but faltered over the closing stages to finish eight minutes behind. Nicell finished 24th overall, beating out Eeva Lantela of North Vancouver and Deborah Askew of Nanaimo who crossed the line together 25 minutes back. A planned five-minute rest at the half-way point paid dividends for Wakelin. who finished stroang- Ivy in fifth overall. North Vancouver's Potricia Jensen were the top husband-wife pairing. finishing together in 44th place in a time of 7:20. Liisa Lantela of North Van- couver «mother of women’s second-place finisher Eeva Lantela} made the half-way cut- off time with two minutes to spare but withdrew from the race. The oldest competitor, 61- year-old Frank Kuruez of West Vancouver, finished third in the men's 50+ division in 7:39. Race director Enzo Federico said Findlay’s performance was exceptional, “Only a handful of athletes in North America could come close to this time. His record is jikely to stand for some time. Having run a hard race in the Western States 100 (miles) only a couple of weeks ago (finishing third), we expected him to be below his best here — we were wrong!" The fast times were aided by cool, damp weather conditions, although slippery surfaces on tocks and bridges slowed the competitors. David and Fast Trac girls soccer team impressive in Italian tourney THE FASTTRAC Under-18 Giris Soceer Team, coached by Metro Gerella, returned home this week after a successful tour of haly. The team made a solid showing in its first Italian tournament, the prestigious Sardinia Cup, with a ninth-place finish out of 16 teams. Victories were posted over the Sardinia All-Stars 3-1, the German All-Stars t-0, and the Greek Na- tional Team 2-0. Losses were suf- fered against the Polish National Team 4-1, the tournament final- ists, and the host Cagliari 3-2. Tournament goal scorers were Francesca Mazzei, 1, Karen Jones, 3, and Silvana Bertini, 4. Mazzei was commended for her consistent play while striker Bertini was selected as the tournament's most valuable player. The final tournament competi- tion saw the FastTrac team claim the championship in the Soverato tournament i Calabria. This competition saw flawless defense and offense as wins were posted in every case by shut-out scores. The scores were: over host Soverato 5-0, over South Africa (Swaziland) 2-0, the Czechoslovakian National Team 2-0, and, in an exciting overtime win. over the Bulgarian National Team LG. Bertini made a clean sweep as she was again selected as the most valuable player. Coach Gerella was particularly pleased with the overall play of the team as they allowed only seven goals against on the entire tour, “The calibre of play there was very, very high,”’ said Gerella. Gerella also indicated that four players were offered professional contracts in fraly: Jones, Sephie Spilhorghs of North Vancouver, Lisa Bliskis, and Bertini, also of North Vancouver.
