Not only is it the smallest displacement V-6 engine in mass production, it is also the first V-6 engine available in this segment. One of the primary reasons Mazda chose to develop a small- displacement V-6 for the MX-3 is the smoothness that this configu- ration offers when compared to an in-line four-cylinder engine of the same size. The quick throttle response, overall quietness and silky smoothness of the MX-3’s V-6 engine embody the same characteristics as Mazda’s legend- ary rotary engine. Output for this engine is 130 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 115 foot-pounds of torque at 4,500 rpm. The engine features sequen- tial multi-port. fuel injection and dual overhead camshafts operating 24 valves to provide excellent throtile response and driveability. Hydraulic valve lash adjusters eliminate the need for valve ad- justments. In developing this all-new engine for the MX-3, Mazda’s engineers set out to reaffirm the company’s reputation for building durable, reliable engines. Another group of engines were run non-stop at 7,000 rpm for 200 hours. The result of this testing is an engine that not only delivers exceptional power and response, but is also built to be virtually trouble-free.
